The Museums

Historic Museum of Tracadie, New Brunswick

The Academie Sainte-Famille, which served for many years as a school and boarding school, houses the historic museum of Tracadie on the second floor.  It is a unique exposition of its kind, having as theme “The Lazaretto, a History of Compassion”, recalling the history of leprosy in New Brunswick.  The museum opened in 1968, the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the Religious Hospitallers of Saint Joseph in Tracadie.  Numerous interpretation panels guide the visitors.   The museum exhibits medical instruments, pharmacy paraphernalia, objects having belonged to the lepers, articles of worship, photos and Micmac artefacts,  A heritage walk recalls the contribution of the Hospitallers to health care and education, leading the visitor to the leper cemetery close to the hospital.
